yes, you're absolutely right. the past clarifies our present and future and provides context for us to determine what we are seeing (and therefore how we react). i guess that hope is omnipresent throughout time... hope is a thing of the past, present, and future. good to know, we need all the hope we can get!!

thanks Laurel :] apologies that it took a while to reply.
you're right. one can only hope that future be different (or remain the same, depending on the situation). one can't hope for the past to change, for that would be paradoxical -- a conversation for another day :D.

but what gives us inspiration to hope? injusticies and negative situations, yes. but how can we define injustice if we haven't experienced justice to begin with? how can we label a situation "negative" if our lives have not experienced some kind of positive?

it reminds me of this quote by C.S. Lewis:
"If a man falls into a pool, he calls himself wet, because he came from a dry place. But a fish knows its not wet because it only knows water"

we can only know if our situation is negative if we have experienced the positive. that's where the past comes into play. in a loose sense, hope resides in the past. rather, it relies on past experiences. through our reminiscing, we are reminded what is good in life.

that's one man's opinion. haha

thanks for your thoughts and comments, though :]
and i really apologize if i misunderstood your comment and you really did understand what i was saying, but just pondering via soliloquy :P

this is beautiful... i've never really thought about hope residing in the past. but does it really? is hope not a thing of the future? we hope for change, hope for things to come. after all, you can't change the past...

haha I've read it. I think it's time for me to read it again... although I loved the book, I dont think I could comprehend all the nuggets L'Engle put into it [not a fan of what Disney did to it, though]. I also enjoyed its sequel "A Wind in the Door."

Have you ever read "Walking on Water"? A very different approach than L'Engle's fictional books, but very intriguing. I defintely recommend it.
